WHY IS LARRY IN GLASGOW SO HAPPY?

Larry is happy because he is physically active. He gets outside in the fresh air. He looks great and therefore is irresistible to women. Ah but seriously, being physically active makes a huge positive difference to our quality of life.

“If exercise were a pill, it would be one of the most cost-effective drugs ever invented,” says Dr Nick Cavill, a NHS Health Promotion Consultant.

Did you know that man wasn’t always the top of the food chain. Back in the day of the caveman, the woolly mammoth & the sabre tooth tiger, man was pretty much on the menu for most predators.

So in order to avoid getting eaten man developed a ‘fight or flight’ response, which is basically a survival mechanism. We had two choices stand and fight or flight, ie do a runner. Both of these choices required a burst of adrenaline which meant man unconsciously shut down all non-essential systems and directed oxygen and power to his brain, muscles and eyes to either fight or run away.

Fast forward several millennia and we are top dogs, but we still have the same fight or flight response programmed into our DNA. So next time you need to have a difficult conversation with your boss, an argument with your partner or your daughter wants to wear a dress that is really a t-shirt your adrenaline levels will rocket.

Now I know your not going to fight your partner or your daughter or run away from your boss so where does the adrenaline go. Well simply it goes into the blood stream where it can have a determental effect on our bodies.

The answer, find a physical activity you enjoy, work off that excess adrenaline, get fit and like Larry become irresistible.

Hi Larry. I couldn’t agree more with you about the need for regular daily exercise, preferably in the open air. I’m getting rather long in the tooth nowadays but still can’t start my day without a good hour’s very brisk walk. At one time that wound have been a jog, but my knees are funny things nowadays. Swimming a few times a week is great, too. As for being irresistible, I’ll ask my grandchildren what they think about that. 🙂
